Top 60 Super League Players of 2020: Part Three

Here it is! The final installment in my top 60 Super League players of 2020. If you missed part one, or part two, have a read of them before we go through the top five here.

5) LIAM FARRELL
2019 Ranking: 20th
A real Super League legend and one of the most consistent players in the competition for the last decade, the 30-year-old has enjoyed a terrific year for the Cherry and Whites. The second rower has registered six tries and five assists, which is a hell of a return for a second rower. His handling is very good and he is able to find a pass near the line, which goes some way to explaining his assists figure. His strength and power are also key attributes to the Englishman, and he is the second-highest metre-maker in the league, with 2384. He also boasts the third-most tackles in the competition. Quite simply, Farrell is a player with no weaknesses. He is good in all departments.

4) AIDAN SEZER
This new signing has absolutely transformed his team in his first year in West Yorkshire. Huddersfield have gone from a relegation-threatened side into one that ended up just outside of the playoffs, and so much of that is down to the signing of the brilliant Aidan Sezer from Canberra Raiders. The major injection of quality that the half-back has brought was noticeable right from the start of the year. The Australian's kicking game has been absolutely exceptional and he has used it to guide his team around the field all season. Seven tries and eighteen assists are breathtaking numbers for a player operating at a bottom-half team. Sezer only signed a one-year-deal and surely Ian Watson's first job as Huddersfield coach is to ensure that the 29-year-old's stay in England is extended.

3) LACHLAN COOTE
2019 Ranking: 4th
A world-class rugby league player. Coote's contribution to the St Helens attack is remarkable. In thirteen appearances in the league, he scored eight tries of his own and assisted fourteen. Yes - twenty-two try contributions in just thirteen games! His ability to arrive in the line from full-back just at the right time makes him a major threat to opposition defences, but it is his pass selection and range that makes him such a great player to be on a team with. Coote may be a full-back but his contribution rate is so ridiculous that it's like having another half-back on the pitch. A player who has made Super League look effortless in his two seasons in England and the biggest compliment I can pay him is that Saints didn't just replace Ben Barba - possibly the most talented player in Super League ever - when they signed Coote, they upgraded on him. His consistency and all-round contribution makes him a better player to have on the team than Barba.

2) ALEX WALMSLEY
2019 Ranking: 9th
What a player. The St Helens prop has been absolutely unbelievable this season and been a huge part of Saints retaining their Super League crown. When Luke Thompson moved on from Saints mid-season to join Canterbury Bulldogs, it felt like Kristian Woolf's team would really struggle in the forward pack without him. But Walmsley has stepped up massively and taken on the role of two players. His work with the ball in hand is absolutely ridiculous and with 257 carries of the ball, averages nearly nine metres per carry. This is an indicator of his strength and how difficult he is to stop with the ball in hand, as is the fact that he has scored nine tries, even though props rarely go over for tries. He has just been unstoppable near the line this season. Also consider that he played the full 80 minutes of the Grand Final with a torn knee cartilage. Monster.

1) BEVAN FRENCH
The winner. I am crowning Bevan French as the best player in Super League 2020. He may only be 24, but he has dominated the competition this season for Wigan. Despite being handed the number six shirt, he has spent nearly all of the year playing at full-back. The Australian, who was arrived in England at the back end of 2019 from Parramatta Eels, has taken the league apart in similar fashion to Ben Barba two seasons ago. His pace, evasion and ability to go through a gap have made him able to make opposition players look stupid at times, most notably with his hat-trick against Salford, which featured a stunning solo try for the second, in which he caught the ball from a high kick and went all the way to the other end of the field to score. It's twelve tries and seven assists for French, who came oh-so-close to having a Grand Final victory under his belt, but he does have a League Leaders Shield, which he was a major factor in. Wigan have managed to get him signed for another year and will have a great chance of being up there next year - any team with French, Hastings, Hardaker and the newly-arriving Jai Field and John Bateman would.
